Where does oval end and oblong begin?

Our costume group keeps using oval in two different ways while planning a decorative mask workshop. One person is describing a face category, while another is describing the paper pattern on the table. I want to clear up the vocabulary before we start choosing shapes for the paper templates. I am considering face shape measurements as a starting point for that discussion. The aim is to describe the outline consistently, without assuming that a category determines the fit. Our draft briefing currently mentions overall length, cheekbone width, and the shape of the jaw. The briefing should make it obvious when we are naming an outline and when we are checking dimensions. We can make paper mockups, so there is no need to settle every detail with a category name. How would you explain this without turning a simple introduction into a long lecture?
